Sophie Nixon

Sophie Nixon was born in Cheshire in 1972. She studied at the Mid-Cheshire College of Art and Design before graduating from the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in 1995 with a BA Honours degree in Fine Art specialising in painting.

Inspired by land and cityscapes Sophie’s work looks at the human interaction with the environment, focussing on the points where the natural world and people cross paths and the imprints this leaves on the landscape. This work varies from studies in mixed media on paper to oil on canvas, with the thin layering of paint representing the feeling of the imprint made by the layering of time of these interactions on the landscape.

Currently working as a full time artist in Manchester Sophie has undertaken a number of commissions for private residences and commercial premises. Her most recent work has been inspired by the Manchester cityscape and her travels to cities like New York, Paris and London. These cities allow her to reflect upon the constantly evolving skyline amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life and how this contrasts with the constant and historical flow of nature on the landscape.
