Rachel Houghton’s work seeks to explore what lies beneath or beyond the surface of an image, view of a landscape or use of an object.
Often, various surfaces are manipulated with chemicals to etch away the outer layers, to reveal hidden histories and buried truths. Through this approach, the work takes on a more visceral quality than a photographic representation could achieve.
Her subjects are usually places/ images/ objects that encompass the passing of time and carry a sense of displacement.
