Valerie Clarke

I have always been interested in using natural materials in my work. I like to explore the properties of the materials and the processes that transform them into something different and perhaps unexpected. My interest in the relationship between the landscape and the body has often resulted in my work being produced in situ. The nature of the materials and effects of the elements mean that the work has a transitory existence, which echoes our own relationship with the earth.

My interest has expanded to consider both society on a wider scale, which resulted in curating an exhibition exploring consumerism; and in contrast to the sociological perspectives, the intimate, subconscious world of the individual mind.

I have worked as a lecturer in further education for many years and have undertaken residencies, schools projects, commissions and collaborations.
