Peter Seal

Peter Seal

Started: 18th Jul 2014 | Ended: 27th Jul 2014

Private view 18th July, 6-8pm
Open: Saturdays and Sundays until 27th July, 11-4pm

Following on from his award of first prize in the inaugural Bankley Open Call exhibition last year, this show presents an opportunity to enjoy a major body of works on canvas and paper by the artist Peter Seal.

Born in Scotland, and resident in Manchester since the early Eighties, Peter Seal has built a solid reputation for his quietly powerful abstract paintings. The work is notable for its subtle geometries and resonant colour. Notwithstanding their apparent simplicity, each of Seal’s paintings can be six to eight weeks in the making, much of which might be not in the physical act of painting itself, but in a highly considered assimilation or “settling time”. The work is notable also for its craftsmanship and its beauty of surface, achieved through a gradual process of layering.

Along with canvases, Seal will also show a substantial group of black and white collages. These are more organic in form and process to the paintings, and serve as a parallel activity.

Unmade In England - Amanda Whewell

Unmade In England - Amanda Whewell

Started: 13th Jun 2014 | Ended: 5th Jul 2014

Private View: Friday 13th June, 6-9pm
Open: every Friday, Saturday and Sunday until 5th July, 11-4pm

Unmade in England emerged from a process based project which involved deconstructing charity shop clothes and reconstructing them into balls of yarn and quilted fabric. The resulting yarn and quilts had the potential to be transformed into something else...

Pre-used clothing & household textiles are unmade and remade to create evolving artworks. The familiarity of the materials makes the work accessible and evocative whilst the demolition process harbours disturbing undertones.

The fabrics have individual histories from which secrets can be discovered and fragments recognized to tell a story or ignite a memory.

Amanda will be running free workshops inspired by the exhibition on 21, 22, 28, 29 June, details to follow on www.unmadeinengland.blogspot.com
A Dream Within a Dream

A Dream Within a Dream

Open: Saturdays 17th May - 7th Jun, 12.30-5.30pm

"Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?"
Edgar Allan Poe

The exhibition takes its title from a work by Sabine Tress, ‘A dream within a dream’, 2014. The Edgar Allan Poe poem which it shares the same name with is a poem about trying to distinguish between reality and fantasy.

In a similar way to dreaming, the activity of abstract painting often treads the line between reality and fantasy, sometimes it is hard to separate the two from each other. The unconscious state of dreaming offers us access to different memories and ideas, whilst in painting we can often look back at created paintings and realise that something has been included in the work from a previous memory.

The fully immersive activity of creating an abstract painting, with the full involvement, and the enjoyment of the process can create a kind of flow. This cognitive flow is a well accepted an idea proposed by Hungarian psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi.

Cognitive flow suggests that some activities creates an energized focus, and results in all your attention being put into the task at hand with no more attention being left for anything else. There is a merging of action and awareness as well as improvement of performance which results in a intrinsically rewarding experience.

The focus of flow can offer clear goals and direction which in turn offers great feedback, giving the painter the feeling that their actions matter and have a real effect on the painting and world.

A Dream within a Dream continues a thread of Pluspace exhibitions, such as Painted Thought (2014), Without an Edge there is no Middle (2013), Form / Function (2013) and Meditations (2013), that examines contemporary painting.

100 Adapted Orphans - Jo Clements

100 Adapted Orphans - Jo Clements

Started: 2nd May 2014 | Ended: 7th May 2014

Opening event Thursday 1st May 2014, 6-8pm
Open 12-4pm from 2-7th May 2014

The exhibition will show 100 films, displayed as QR codes, that make up the work '100 Adapted Orphans'. Random glimpses of narrative experienced both via the printed text and within the films' content, construct an incomplete and therefore partly imagined analysis of real situations, individuals, theories and movements. The films have been sourced from online moving image archives and respond to the artists ongoing research into the relationships between original intent/provenance, digital consumer and object, copyright and the resulting implications/tensions for the re-appropriation of existing materials.
