Multi-Award Winning Laura I. Art Gallery invites you to Mental Health, Art and Maternity, an online event preview exploring ideas connected with Teresa Wilson’s online exhibition Unknowable: the Archaeology of the Human Mind

The event will introduce Teresa Wilson’s sculpture and installation and you will meet the artist and hear her talk about her art practice, background and influences.

“ My work is concerned with a kind of ‘uncanny maternal’ - a concept which can be described as a strange, anxious feeling created by a fear within the domestic environment - causing familiar objects, children and family to appear changed and unfamiliar”. Teresa Wilson

The evening will focus on the aspect of her work which looks at the ideas of maternity and mental health within her practice and in the wider context of art. Maternity is a central theme for artists and mental health is inextricably tied up with this - in issues of isolation, loneliness, the fear of looking after children and the fear of not being able to have children.

Not only for those who identify as women - the discussion concerns all of us and everyone is welcome to join in.

Joining the conversation and a special guest for the evening will be Mental Health and Arts Activist Helen Sargeant. Helen is an Artist, Mother, Academic and Creative Director of Maternal Art & MAM.

During the evening you will be invited to ask questions to Teresa and Helen, if you wish to do so.

There will also be a 10% discount for anyone attending the preview evening who is also interested in buying artworks by Teresa Wilson.

In addition to the preview event, you are also invited to a one- to- one Zoom tour where you will be able to see all the artworks in closer detail. These tours are available from 25 June to 11 July, bookable on Eventbrite.
