Train Wreck

Train Wreck

Starts: 8th Mar 2025 | Ends: 23rd Mar 2025

Train Wreck is an engaging exhibition showcasing the collaboration between artists Axel Bottenberg and Jack Doyle. This work centres on the theme of railways in Belgium, a country significant to both artists. Axel lived in Belgium from the early 70’s until the mid-1980s, while Jack began visiting there for annual holidays around the same period.

The artworks build upon concepts from their 2019 train-themed piece, "Kettingtrekken". In this work, two small railway engines participate in a tug-of-war: one half is situated in a fantastical miniature Belgian landscape, while the other is set in a dilapidated English scenery. The Belgian model train is built to a higher standard than the British one, this leads to its consistent victories.

Virtueel Vertrijk is a 7 km-long computer simulation of the railway line and landscape surrounding the town of Vertrijk in Belgium. It features elements from both artists' works, including signage, fast food outlets, and concrete bunkers. The trains operating along this line are inspired by their real-life counterparts, adding an authentic touch to their journey.

Pizza Railway is a large-scale, narrow-gauge model inspired by "micro layout" designs for model railways. While typical layouts of this type fit into standard 12-inch or 14-inch pizza boxes, this design has been enlarged to doll’s house scale. The layout is divided into seven "pizza slices", and trains circulate at two overlapping levels through various themed landscapes.
